Apple again came under pressure from the U.S. government to unblock the iPhone terrorists. On Monday, January 13, Attorney General William Barr sent a flurry of criticism for the company because of its refusal to help unlock the smartphones of the terrorist who shot at the military air base in Pensacola (Florida, USA) on December 6, 2019.

The shooter, Mohammed Saeed Al-Shamrani, owned two iPhones, and the FBI quickly received a court order to analyze their contents. Despite the fact that the terrorist shot one of the devices, the bureau specialists were able to fix it. The second device was also disabled, but it was also restored.

Both iPhones are protected by encryption and a password that criminologists could not get (Al-Shamrani himself was killed in a shootout with the police, so it is not possible to find out the password from him).

“It is very important to find out with whom and what the shooter spoke about before death. But the devices are designed so that it is almost impossible to unlock them without a password. We asked Apple to help us unlock the iPhone owned by the shooter. So far, we have not received any real help from Apple, ”said Barr.

Nevertheless, according to The New York Post, according to the company, it has been cooperating with the FBI since the day of the shooting. In particular, the company gave investigators access to the terrorist-owned iCloud account and transaction data from several accounts. True, representatives of Apple did not specify whether the company will assist in unlocking the iPhone.

"Americans should not choose between a weakening of encryption and a successful outcome of the investigation," the company said, adding that there are now many other ways to get information from Apple devices.
