Cybercriminals launched a large-scale campaign to hack Samsung smartphones in South Korea. Attackers primarily target celebrities and extort money from their victims, threatening to publish their personal data on the Web.

According to the ITHome resource, among the victims there are famous actors, directors, musicians, pop idols, chefs, etc. Cybercriminals demand a ransom of $ 43 thousand to $ 860 thousand from each victim.

Attackers gained access to photos, videos, text messages and other personal information of many celebrities. In case of refusal to pay the ransom, the extortionists threaten to publish all the stolen data in the public domain. According to the resource, so far only one case has been recorded of satisfying the demands of ransomware - a popular singer who wished to remain anonymous paid the required amount to prevent leakage.

However, another well-known South Korean actor Zhu Zhenmo refused to comply with the requirements of criminals, as a result of which his data immediately appeared on the Web.

Samsung has not yet commented on this incident.
Earlier, SucurityLab wrote that Samsung smartphones and tablets are supposedly shipped.with pre-installed "spyware" software, regularly accessing Chinese servers. One of the users of the Reddit forum drew attention to the Device Care function, which is related to the Chinese company Qihoo 360, which appeared in scandals regarding secret data collection.
