The criminals introduced JavaScript code to the compromised web sites to simulate digital credit cards.
The Indonesian National Police, at a joint press conference with Interpol, announced the arrest of three Indonesian cybercriminals who, like the Magecart gangs, broke into hundreds of international online stores and stole customer card payment data.
Three criminals from the cities of Jakarta and Yogyakarta (Indonesia) were arrested last December on charges of data theft, fraud and unauthorized access. As in the case of the Magecart groupings, attackers exploited vulnerabilities in online store sites running on the Magento and WordPress content management platforms.
The criminals introduced JavaScript code on compromised web sites to simulate digital credit cards, steal user credentials in real time, their payment card numbers, as well as names and addresses.
Although representatives of the Indonesian police reported hacking 12 websites of online stores, information security experts from Sanguine Security claim that the same group is behind the theft of credit card information in more than 571 online stores.
“Hacks can be attributed to these criminals because of the strange message that was contained in the entire skimming code. The phrase “Success gan” has been present for many years in all their skimming infrastructures, ”the experts explained.
Attackers usedstolen credit cards for the purchase of electronic goods and other luxury goods, and then also tried to resell some of them at a relatively low price through local online stores in Indonesia.
One of the accused pleaded guilty to hacking online store sites and introducing skimmers since 2017, the Indonesian news channel Metro TV said.
