Cybercriminals robbed Pakistan's leading bank, United Bank Limited (UBL), via internet banking, using compromised data from a number of debit cards to conduct fraudulent financial transactions in dollars (instead of Pakistani rupees).

The cyber incident forced the financial institution to suspend the services of international financial transactions through debit cards of almost all customers.

“We have not been subjected to a cyberattack. No data leakage or hacking has occurred. We have received complaints from some of our customers about fraudulent transactions through their debit cards. Those customers who lost money through no fault of their own will receive their money back in accordance with applicable banking and insurance laws,” a spokesman for United Bank Limited confirmed to The Express Tribune.

It remains unknown how much money and from how many bank accounts was stolen by cybercriminals.
