A car can say more about the owner than the phone.

According to Forbes, federal law enforcement agencies, together with immigration and border services, use technologies that use vulnerabilities in media systems to extract data from 10,000 different car models.

In 2022, immigration officers and police officers increasingly began collecting evidence in this way – sometimes this gives more information than the phone of the criminal. Judicial documents and state transaction reports show that agencies entrusted with monitoring the Mexican border « spent record amounts on car hacking tools », while claiming a huge amount of valuable evidence, which can be obtained from on-board computers.

According to Forbes, the Customs and Border Control Service ( CBR ) and the Immigration Customs Service ( ICE ) use a toolkit called iVe from Berla's car forensics. The iVe kit includes a mobile application for identifying TS, a hardware kit for accessing media systems, and specialized data analysis software. According to state contracts, in August CBP spent more than $ 380,000 on iVe. ICE, which has been buying Berla tools since 2010, spent $ 500,000 on iVe in September.

Privacy Defenders Team Surveillance Technology Oversight Project ( S.T.O.P. ) stated that cars also store passenger data, and the police can retrieve them using special tools. According to S.T.O.P. estimates, in 2020, law enforcement agencies gained access to on-board computers hundreds of thousands of times. Moreover, loopholes in the laws allow you to access data about the car, information from a telephone connected to the machine and accounts in web services without a warrant.

Forbes mentioned a recent search of the 2019 Dodge Charger, which was used to transport illegal citizens across the border from Mexico to the United States. The police were able to access the car’s information and entertainment system and collected a wide range of – suspect’s location, user passwords, email addresses, IP addresses and phone numbers.

An investigator from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives ( Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, ATF ) said that media systems in modern cars can be used to collect large amounts of data, as well as for remote espionage behind a phone connected to the car.

ATF has confirmed that this method of collecting information is available in more than 10,000 different models of BMW, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Ford, GMC, Hummer, Jeep, Lincoln, Maserati, Mercedes, Mercury, Pontiac, Ram, Saturn, Toyota and Volkswagen. Moreover, Tesla's information and entertainment systems store Google and Spotify service credentials, as well as Wi-Fi passwords, etc.

Earlier, we wrote about how to remotely crack a car without even starting the engine . As part of such a cyber attack, we can unlock certain functions in the CU, remove program restrictions, etc.
