At the headquarters of the Danish police. Denmark, officers do not break away from their computers in search of dangerous criminals. However, advanced police officers are not looking for villains in databases or social networks, for this they play Counter-Strike and other games for hours. How is this very unusual system for catching criminals arranged?

A special-purpose police squad of ten qualified employees was created last year amid growing online crime during the COVID pandemic and lockdowns. Law enforcement officers work openly, their nicknames directly inform other players that they are from the police. Although sometimes officers can work undercover.

Cyberpatrol is also present on Twitch, Discord, Instagram *, Facebook * and TikTok to make the Internet safer for both children and adults. The main goals of the detachment are financial fraudsters and sexual maniacs, but such individuals, of course, are not limited.

« Just as you see a police car patrolling the streets, now you can see police officers in cyberspace », — explains to Cisse Birkebek, the head of the patrol.

Miriam Michaelsen, Danish lawyer and founder of the association « Digital Responsibility », has long called on the police to control the Internet. « When you see a passing police car, it can affect both victims and criminals ... the same thing on the Internet », — says Michaelsen.

Since its inception in April 2022, an online police patrol has already opened more than 65 cases. « We see many cases of abuse and attempted harassment of adolescents. Many attempts to lure money from them, many cases of fraud in the game community », — says Birkebek.

Cyber squad employees are reportedly playing CS: GO, Valorant, Fortnite and FIFA. They use nicknames « Officer 1 », « Officer 2 », etc. Law enforcement officers play, observe and make contacts, as if they were on regular patrols on the street. However, they are not deprived of work on the street either. Most often, patrol officers work at a time, and 2-3 people each, periodically replacing each other.

On Twitch, we directly say: « Hello, we are police officers. We play and we need volunteers from chat. You can come and play with us », — said 36-year-old officer Rimer Topup.

« I don’t think we can solve all the problems with digital violence with a similar online patrol. But if we see that at least 10, 15, 20 people will receive help in a way that they would not dare to ask otherwise, it has a certain meaning », Miriam Michaelsen said.

The budgets for financing cyber patrols are still consistent and discussed annually, but officers hope that such online activity will become permanent for them. All members of the digital squad speak in a positive way about such work. According to them, being discoverers in something — is extremely exciting. And the patrol itself in the video games — the activity is not at all dusty, fun and interesting.

Would you like to serve in such an online squad and fight cybercriminals and other online villains?
