Even a few years after a large-scale campaign using the WannaCry ransomware, which affected many users in more than 100 countries, the malware still continues to infect new devices and even took the first place among all ransomware last year.

According to a study by Precise Security experts, more than 23.5% of all ransomware attacks in 2019 were related to WannaCry, and spam and phishing emails remained the most common source of infection.

Among the factors leading to infection, experts indicate spam / phishing emails (67%), lack of cyber security skills (36%), and weak passwords (30%). Only 16% of infections were through malicious sites and ads.

Like other ransomware, WannaCry encrypts files stored on the device and requires users to pay for the decryption key.
Ransomware attacks against government, healthcare, energy, and education organizations continue to grow, the researchers said. While simple ransomware blocks devices in a simple way, more advanced malware uses a method called cryptovirus ransomware
