The Brazilian authorities are preparing to file a criminal charge against ally Edward Snowden, journalist Glenn Greenwald. According to the BBC, Greenwald is accused of "assisting and encouraging" a criminal group that has cracked the phones of Brazilian officials.

The anger of those in power fell upon the journalist after he published a series of articles on The Intercept. The articles are revealing in nature and shed light on serious offenses by the top leadership of the country. In particular, they featured “a large amount of previously undisclosed material,” presumably related to the Brazilian prosecutor’s office and other officials.

According to the prosecutor’s office, Greenwald directly “helped, encouraged, and directed” a group of hackers who obtained illegal access to online chats used by prosecutors and other persons involved in the Car Wash operation. This operation is a large-scale multi-year investigation of corruption schemes, which excited Brazilian politics.

Greenwald called the accusation an attempt on freedom of the press in Brazil, and Snowden - a real threat to journalistic investigations.

At present, the prosecutor’s office has only proposed charges, and the final decision on their official presentation or rejection must be made by the court.
