A Russian citizen accused of developing the NLBrute hacker tool is convicted in Florida of using this « tool to create a criminal empire ».

According to the US Department, Darius Pankov, also known as « dpxaker », created NLBrute malware that cracked Windows credentials on systems with insecure RDP protocols using bruthers. Pankov was arrested in Georgia 4 months ago and recently extradited to the United States.

According to the case file, from 2016 to 2019, Pankov earned hundreds of thousands of dollars by selling NLBrute to other intruders for $ 250 in bitcoins and allowing some of them to resell this tool.

He also, as stated in the documents, sold the stolen accounting data on the darknet so that cybercriminals could use them in further attacks. In total, Pankov put up for sale credentials to enter more than 35,000 computers from around the world, earning more than $ 350,000. Among the compromised systems, two unnamed American law firms in Florida were mentioned.

Pankov has been charged with conspiracy, access fraud and computer fraud, which, according to the prosecutor's office, can bring him to prison for up to 47 years. US authorities also plan to arrest $ 358,437, which they associate with Pankov’s crimes.

NLBrute made a name for itself at a time when the brutheros attacks were on the rise. In 2018, NLBrute was one of the key tools in hacking systems that used the Microsoft RDP protocol as a way to penetrate vulnerable systems. NLBrute was also associated with the REvil and Netwalker factions.
