Chinese scientist Hongjin Tang was sentenced by the U.S. District Court to 24 months in prison and fined $ 150,000 for data theft.
He was hired by an oil company from Oklahoma, whose name is not called, in June 2017. The Chinese scientist joined the research team that was developing a new generation of batteries for storing energy. Subsequently, vigilant colleagues convicted Tana of stealing information constituting a trade secret. The investigation revealed that the amount of potential damage from data theft is more than 1 billion dollars.
Hongjin Tang admitted his deed. On his flash drive hundreds of files were discovered. However, 5 of them, as it turned out, were removed before Tan handed over the drive to authorized employees. Files were later found on an external hard drive that was discovered during searches.
Assistant Attorney General for Homeland Security John Demers said,
“Tang’s testimony once again confirms that China continues to steal US intellectual property. Our department will continue to deal with similar incidents that may cost the Americans their work. ”
“Before us is a practically classic case of theft of information by an employee of the company. A DLP system would respond to an attempt to write sensitive data to external media and help prevent an incident. According to statistics, more than 80% of information threats come precisely from insider activities of employees. Therefore, the existence of a system that can stop this activity reduces the financial and reputation risks of companies, ”commented Andrei Barmuta, head of the Falcongaze’s development department, on the situation.
