Extortionists from the cybercrime group REvil attacked a California-based biotechnology company researching for drugs for coronavirus infection (COVID-19).

As reported in the document with the Securities and Exchange Commission of the USA, the company is 10x Genomics was the victim of an attack with the use of the software extorsive, during which were stolen confidential data.

After the attack, ransomware published company documents on the Web with information about more than 1,200 employees and its internal computer systems. According to the criminals, they stole a terabyte of information from 10x Genomics. The firm restored normal operation “without significant consequences” and said it was working with law enforcement to investigate the incident.

The company is currently part of an international alliance dedicated to the sequencing of cells recovered from COVID-19 patients as part of an attempt to explore possible treatments for this disease.
